Abstract. The paper reviews the most important lines of the European Union policy on scientific literacy, and presents our main results in science education in schools. Our achievements in the field are related to the work as part of the EU Comenius network “Hands-on Science” and in the frame of the national project “Science Education and Training in a Knowledge-Based Society”. The major directions of action in science education through science clubs and science fairs are described, along with the various means we use to engage young students to follow technical carriers.
